While it may not offer the same level of excitement as a journey to the outer reaches of space with Virgin Galactic, the launch of Virgin Atlantic’s new A330-900neo aircraft, featuring a completely revamped Upper-Class cabin along with premium economy and economy options, is a momentous occasion in its own right.
Following a tumultuous period for the airline amidst the pandemic, it is making a remarkable comeback by introducing a fresh route from London Heathrow to Tampa, Florida, operated by its latest aircraft.
The aircraft’s sleek and modern interior, boasting 30 forward-facing Upper Class suites a significant departure from the previous angled seating arrangement. These suites, arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration across eight rows, ensure that every passenger enjoys direct aisle access.
It’s worth noting that only seats in the A and K positions grant the privilege of window views. Despite being branded as Upper Class, the cabin exudes a business-class ambiance rather than a first-class one (and is priced accordingly, with return flights averaging around £3,000).
Yet, the comfort level is so exceptional that one could easily mistake it for a first-class experience. The A330neo’s interiors are bathed in enchanting hot pink lighting, and each seat is enclosed within its own private cabin, complete with sliding doors that create considerable privacy.
Passengers have the luxury of reclining their seats to a fully flat position, transforming them into plush beds adorned with soft mattresses, cotton duvets, and pillows. They can slip into comfortable Virgin Atlantic pajamas, ensuring a peaceful and secure slumber. For those who prefer uninterrupted rest, there’s even a “do not disturb” sign to prevent disturbances during breakfast.
At the forefront of the cabin lies the Retreat Suite, an innovative concept introduced by the airline. This exclusive area comprises two exceptionally spacious suites in row 1 and two additional “buddy” benches opposite them, allowing a group of four to indulge in face-to-face dining.
These seats can also be converted into extra-long beds, measuring an impressive 6 feet 7 inches, surpassing the length of British Airways’ first-class beds. Interestingly, booking the Retreat Suite isn’t a straightforward process.
Upper Class passengers interested in occupying this coveted space must secure it through an upgrade, which is subject to availability and offered on a first-come, first-served basis, with a 14-day window before departure.
The Tampa-bound flight lasts just under 10 hours during the daytime. Champagne and juice are served as soon as passengers settle into their seats. Lunch is served shortly after take-off. The food on the flight exceeded expectations, resembling dishes from upscale restaurants.
For instance, the starter consisted of finely diced beetroot salad with goats cheese mousse, beautifully presented. The main vegetarian course offered a rustic yet satisfying and spicy vegetable korma with paratha. One passenger across from me opted for the delicious chicken and wild mushroom pie.
Other choices included miso and sesame-crusted salmon, desserts like black forest gateau and brioche bread and butter pudding, and a cheese plate with port.
The drinks menu was equally impressive, featuring Ayala Champagne, Hambledon English sparkling wine, and Italian prosecco from Virgin Atlantic. They also had a selection of signature cocktails, such as the Orchard Margarita made with Patron Silver tequila, apple juice, and Fever Tree light lemonade.
If hunger strikes, passengers can request a cream tea, samosas, or a gourmet fish finger sandwich. Since most people prefer to get some rest before late-evening departures from Tampa, a quick soup and cheese toasty are available as an alternative to the full dinner service.
The A330-900neo, one of the most advanced aircraft in the skies, brings several remarkable features. It is quieter and more fuel-efficient than its predecessors, reducing carbon emissions, and boasts cutting-edge amenities.
Passengers can enjoy wireless mobile charging pads, large HD screens, and Bluetooth connectivity to use their headphones. The onboard Wi-Fi is speedy and even supports photo uploads to Instagram Stories, although video streaming can be challenging.
Pricing for Wi-Fi starts with 20 minutes free with advertisements, followed by £5.99 for an hour or approximately £20 for the entire flight.
The personal cupboard with a mirrored panel, easily accessible UK/US/EU plug and USB sockets, a pouch of REN skincare minis, an excellent selection of new films, a slide-out tray table, and a spacious counter to place a laptop and personal items.
The abundance of amenities does result in slightly limited shoulder space when lying down. The A330neo’s unique selling point is the Loft, a new communal social space that replaces the traditional Upper Class bar on other Virgin Atlantic planes.
Fear not, though, as the Loft includes fridges where you can help yourself to pre-mixed Negronis. With business class of this caliber, who needs first class?
