United Airlines Pulls Back The Curtain On Latest First Class

Passengers flying in the front cabin of United Airlines are in for an upgraded experience as the airline introduces its brand-new domestic first class. The airline recently offered a sneak peek into the enhanced features, including wireless charging, privacy screens, and the innovative ability to use your phone as a TV remote.

However, it’s important to note that despite the grandiose name, “first class” on United Airlines is more akin to business class on international flights. In the United States, domestic first class closely resembles a traditional layout with a 2-2 seating configuration.

The design of the new seats is reminiscent of a blend between Virgin Australia’s modern 737 MAX business class and Qantas’ premium economy. The seats sport a sturdy exterior shell that appears to be inspired by similar designs. Travelers will have the opportunity to experience these seats firsthand on an upgraded Boeing 737NG later this month.

United Airlines, a member of the Star Alliance, has ambitious plans to introduce its newest first-class offering on approximately 200 domestic aircraft by 2026. This includes models such as the 737 NGs, A321neos, and other 737 MAXs.

According to Mark Muren, United’s Managing Director of Identity, Product, and Loyalty, the enchanting new seat is thoughtfully designed to cater to the requirements of modern travelers. It will feature an array of enhanced amenities such as additional charging options, more spacious compartments for devices, food, drinks, and personal belongings, and heightened privacy.

To meet the demands of modern travelers, United Airlines has equipped its first-class cabins with a 13-inch HD touchscreen that boasts Bluetooth connectivity. This innovative feature enables passengers to enjoy a two-screen experience by using their mobile phones as a remote control. This functionality is reminiscent of Qatar Airways’ convenient ‘zero-touch’ system.

Notably, this exceptional first-class experience was developed in collaboration with PriestmanGoode, the esteemed London-based design experts who also played a role in creating Qatar Airways’ remarkable Qsuites.

United Airlines has incorporated an expanded tray table measuring 18 x 8.5 inches with a built-in tablet holder. This thoughtful addition is perfect for those who prefer to bring their own entertainment and provides ample space for most standard-sized laptops.

To ensure uninterrupted device usage, passengers will have access to three charging options. These include a universal AC outlet, a USB-C port, and a discreet wireless charging dock cleverly tucked beneath the armrest.

The first-class experience on United Airlines also boasts several notable features. Passengers will appreciate the vegan leather upholstery, which adds a touch of sophistication to the cabin. Additionally, winged headrests provide enhanced comfort during the flight. There is a fixed pie-wedge privacy screen to ensure privacy between seats, which may require travelers flying together to adopt the traditional “lean to talk” position.

As a Velocity partner, United Airlines offers Virgin Australia frequent flyers the opportunity to earn points and status credits on their UA flights. Moreover, Virgin Australia frequent flyers can enjoy status-based perks such as access to United Club lounges, including the recently-debuted Newark Terminal A. Priority check-in, security clearance, and boarding are also available to eligible members.
